Incoterms explained for Germany and Gulf shipments
Every shipment between Germany and the Gulf carries a small print decision that shapes the entire deal: the Incoterm. It decides who pays for what, who carries the risk, and at which exact point that risk changes hands.
Get it wrong, and a shipment that looked cheap on paper can end up costing far more once customs, insurance, and final-mile delivery are factored in. Here's what the four most common terms actually mean in practice.
EXW: Ex Works
The buyer takes on almost everything: pickup at the seller's premises, export clearance, main carriage, import clearance, and final delivery. It looks like the lowest price upfront, but it shifts the most work and risk onto you.
FOB: Free on Board
The seller handles everything up to loading the cargo onto the vessel at the port of origin. From that point on, the buyer is responsible for freight, insurance, and import formalities.
The right Incoterm isn't the cheapest one on paper. It's the one that puts each cost where the party best equipped to manage it sits.
CIF: Cost, Insurance and Freight
The seller arranges and pays for the main sea freight and a minimum level of insurance to the named port of destination. Risk still transfers once the goods are loaded, but the seller carries more of the logistics burden.
DDP: Delivered Duty Paid
The seller takes on nearly everything, including import duties and taxes at the destination. It's the most convenient option for the buyer, and typically reflected in a higher quoted price.
Which term should you choose?
A few questions worth asking before you commit to a term:
- Who has better rates and relationships with carriers on this specific lane?
- Who is better positioned to handle customs at origin or destination?
- How much visibility do you want into each leg of the journey?
When we compile offers for a shipment, partners quote against the Incoterm you specify, so the pool of offers you receive is already comparing like for like.
